Umrao Jaan without Ash Dances?
What would Umrao Jaan be without Aishwarya’s mujra? Certainly meaningless! If we were to believe choreographer Vaibhavi, Ash’s movement were restricted because of her heavy costumes. Vaibhavi is on a high since choreographing Bollywood’s signature dance Kajra Re, and that was the reason she was picked for Umrao Jaan. Vaibhavi has been unhappy with the way Aishwarya was made to wear those heavy traditional costumes, making her feel awkward in her dance movements. Bindiya’s (JP Dutta’s wife) insistence on Ash wearing heavy stone jewelry only complicated matters. The choreographer had no choice but to compromise on the quality of choreography. What surprised Vaibhavi more was the focus on Ash looking beautiful rather than on her dancing capabilities. Some delicately choreographed dances are what people expect from a movie with a nautch girl as its protagonist. Ash’s fans are certainly going to feel short-changed on that account.
